Polymers for Neural Implants

چکیده
Neural implants are technical systems that restore sensory or motor functions after injury and modulate neural behavior in neuronal diseases. Neural interfaces or prostheses have lead to new therapeutic options and rehabilitation approaches in the last 40 years. The interface between the nervous tissue and the technical material is the place that determines success or failure of the neural implant. Recording of nerve signals and stimulation of nerve cells take place at this neuro-technical interface. Polymers are the most common material class for substrate and insulation materials in combination with metals for interconnection wires and electrode sites. This work focuses on the neuro-technical interface and summarizes its fundamental specifications first. The most common polymer materials are presented and described in detail. We conclude with an overview of the different applications and their specific designs with the accompanying manufacturing processes from precision mechanics, laser structuring and micromachining that are introduced in either the peripheral or central nervous system. A review on nanostructured stainless steel implants for biomedical application
Over the last two decades, many researchers have developed a variety of stainless steel-based medical implant types, taking full advantage of nanostructuring technologies. In this paper the application, fabrication and development of nanostructured stainless steel based materials with new composition for medical implants will be discussed. It is well established that application of severe plasti...
متن کاملMulti-electrode arrays technology for the non-invasive recording of neural signals: a review article
The recording of electrophysiological activities of brain neurons in the last half-century has been considered as one of the effective tools for the development of neuroscience. One of the techniques for recording the activity of nerve cells is the multi-electrode arrays (MEAs). Microelectrode arrays (MEAs) are usually employed to record electrical signals from electrogenic cells like neurons o...

متن کاملEffects of Biodegradable Polymers on the Rat's Damaged Spinal Cord Neural Membranes
The overall goal of this study was to identify the appropriate biomaterials able to facilitate the regeneration in rat's injured adult spinal cord. Acute damage to axons is manifested as a breach in their membranes, ionexchange distortion across the compromised region, local depolarization and even conduction block. It would be of particular importance to interrupt the progress of events h...
متن کاملImproved Viability of Chronic Neural Implants Using Thin Microelectrodes
The recording interface between neurons and an implanted microelectrode recording site is often compromised due to gliosis, rendering the implant non-functional under chronic conditions. The objective of this project is to design novel microelectrodes that will minimize gliosis under chronic implantation. We test the hypothesis that gliosis can be minimized or eliminated by reducing the cross-s...
